       An extranet is most commonly referred to as an extension of an intranet, a private network containing information about the company accessible only to those in its employment. Extranets act as a link to select individuals outside the company by allowing them access to the information stored inside the intranet.

Internet protocols are typically utilized by extranets so as to provide browser navigation even though the network is situated on a private server. A username and password system can be configured to sectors of the content so as to prevent users from accessing information they have no authorization for.
